Airline Crate Requirements
(See full crate requirements here)
Your pet’s travel crate is an important part of their journey. It must be strong, secure, correctly sized and compliant with the airline’s current requirements.
Important crate requirements
Airline crates must have a solid lower section. Crates with ventilation incorporated into the bottom half are not accepted at Air New Zealand cargo counters.
Some plastic crates can be made from material that is not strong enough for air transport. A crate that collapses or allows leakage can create a serious safety and animal-welfare risk.
The solid lower section also allows the required live-animal stickers to be attached to the sides of the crate, while the Air Waybill label is placed on the top.
Before your pet travels
Please check that:
- The crate is the correct size for your pet.
- The crate is strong and suitable for air transport.
- The lower section is solid.
- The crate is clean and dry.
- Any previous Air Waybill labels have been removed.
- Only permitted material is inside the crate.
What can go inside the crate?
Under the current security requirements, the crate should contain your pet and suitable absorbent material only, such as a thin blanket, towel or an absorbent mat.
Thick blankets, toys and food/treats are not permitted inside the crate.
If you are hiring a crate and returning it on a flight, please ensure it has been completely cleaned and emptied before it is returned. Cargo staff cannot accept dirty or soiled crates for loading.
Important: Airline and regulatory requirements can change. Please contact us if you are unsure whether your crate is suitable before arriving at the airport.
Choosing the Correct Crate Size
Your pet needs enough room to stand, turn around and lie down comfortably.
When choosing a crate:
- Your pet should be able to stand naturally without their head touching the top.
- They should not need to duck to see through the crate door.
- They should be able to turn around comfortably.
- The crate should be long enough for your pet to lie down with their paws extended.
- When your pet is standing outside the crate, they should not be taller or longer than the crate’s internal dimensions.
If you’re unsure what size crate your pet needs, ask us before purchasing or hiring one.
Dog & Cat Carriers
We can help you select the appropriate airline crate for your pet based on their measurements and travel requirements.
If you are supplying your own crate, it is your responsibility to ensure that it meets the airline’s current requirements.

Quotations
All prices and quotations are based on the rates available on the day the quotation is prepared. If rates increase before the date of travel, the difference will be payable by the client.
Where a quotation is based on the client’s own airline crate and the dimensions and weight have been supplied by the client, the quotation may be adjusted if the actual crate dimensions or weight differ from those provided. Any difference in price will be payable by the client.
Quotations are based on weekday flights. Weekend, public holiday and after-hours flights are subject to availability and may incur additional charges.
Crate Sizing & Compliance
If you are providing your own airline crate, you must ensure that it is the correct size for your pet and meets the airline’s current requirements.
We recommend checking the current IATA Live Animals Regulations before purchasing or using your own crate.
Failure to arrive with a suitable and compliant crate may result in your pet being unable to board. In this situation, a $70 cancellation fee and $70 agent fee will be payable by the client.
If you are unsure whether your crate is suitable, please contact us before your travel date.
